Late in the 19th century, New York became one of the first states to recognize the importance of preserving wilderness for future generations by creating the Catskill Forest Preserve. In 1947, a state constitutional amendment was passed to create the ski center toBelleayre Mountain.
Operated by the Department of Environmental Conservation as a year-round outdoor recreation area, Belleayre Mountain is a gateway to the Catskills, showcasing the wilderness of New York. Belleayre's goal is goal is "to bring you exceptional snow, with no glitz or glamour, fuss or frills." The Catskill Park is a mountainous region of public and private lands in Ulster, Greene, Delaware and Sullivan Counties - the "Forest Preserve" counties. 98 peaks over 3,000 feet form an impressive skyline. This special and often remote mountain landscape is nearly 60% privately owned, the home of about 50,000 year-around residents; the rest is publicly owned "Forest Preserve." |
